31 Days of Breastfeeding Journeys | Day 4 | World Breastfeeding Week 2016

"My name is Heather; I am a 34-year-old diabetic mother of 3.  I found out I had Type 2 diabetes in 2006 and after getting it managed, decided to get an insulin pump in order to have tight control while pregnant.  Violett is my third child, my only girl, our darling little princess. She is my breastfeeding success story!

Violett was born on December 4, 2015 and was 10lbs 5oz.  She was whisked away to the NICU before I ever got to hold her due to low blood sugar, a hazard of having a diabetic mother.  Violett was started on a glucose drip in the NICU and was fed formula a few times.  I, meanwhile, was recovering from a C-section and pumping like crazy, trying to get my milk in so Violett could stop getting formula.  After 3 feedings, she has had only breastmilk since then, 7 months and going strong!

Violett was having a hard time latching, so we saw a dentist to get her lip and tongue ties clipped, so for 8 weeks I pumped around the clock, determined to only give my girl that liquid gold!  After another 5 days in the NICU when she was 20 days old due to slow weight gain and a pediatrician that had no idea how to diagnose a tongue tie, Violett was clipped and she has been nursing like a champ ever since!

I have so much support in my nursing journey with Violett, and we will continue our journey until we both feel we are done." ~Heather
