31 Days of Breastfeeding Journeys | Day 12 | World Breastfeeding Week 2016
"I knew from the very beginning that I wanted to breastfeed my son - there was never any doubt in my mind about it. When I think back on our breastfeeding journey together the day that stands out most to me is the day my milk came in three days postpartum.
I literally spent two days hibernating inside my home shirtless and pacing the floors in discomfort. I couldn't stand to have a bra or shirt on and I was constantly dripping like a leaky faucet. The engorgement was so intense that my newborn could barely latch on to my rock hard breasts and when he finally did, I'd let down so hard that he would choke. I just told myself that this was what my body was made to do and that women have been feeding their babies this way for thousands of years, there's no reason why I can't do it, too. So I pushed on and in time my milk regulated.
At the time it was no walk in the park, but now I look back and laugh and think to myself, "I did it. WE did it. We both learned, we both persevered, and we both survived." Now engorgement and leaky boobs are a thing of the past, and so with fondness I reflect on those first chaotic days of adjustment.
I have been blessed with a very easy going breastfeeding journey with my son and would say that the day my milk came in was the highest mountain we have had to climb thus far. From the beginning I had a goal to breastfeed at least until my son's first birthday. Now at 15 months we are still nursing strong and I couldn't be more proud. We will continue on this path until one or both of us are ready to call it quits, but so far I see no end in sight!" ~Candice
